Conventional sandpaper is made to cut quickly and deeply, with crystals specially treated to stand erect and held in place by a hard resin. The abrasives literally dig in and remove the surface of the material you're working with, leaving inconsistent scratch patterns.
Micro-Mesh™ works completely differently. Its backing is a long-lasting cloth bonded to an ultra-flexible cushioning layer. On top of this layer is a very resilient, flexible glue that holds crystals yet allows them to move and rotate without coming loose. The cushioning layer controls how far forward you can push crystals before they penetrate the cushioning layer; this serves as a safety valve. When you start to apply pressure to sand with Micro-Mesh™, the crystals will go into the cushioning layer while beginning to cut a bit. If you push harder, they will go further into the cushioning layer rather than gouge into your workpiece.
Instead of the deep scratch that sandpaper makes, Micro-Mesh™ produce a refined scratch (close to a RMS of 1.0). The cushioning layer also allows the crystals to cut with a planing motion that leaves an extremely consistent scratch pattern and allows you to achieve extraordinary levels of gloss. To understand the difference this offers you, think about this: where conventional abrasives will take surfaces down by 2 or 3 thousandths (.002 or .003), Micro-Mesh™ takes them down one ten thousandth (.0001) or less.
