This soft, 1/10 silver-filled round wire is ideal for creating bangles, rings, cuff bracelets, and a myriad of components that embellish other findings. Round wire is the bread-&-butter of jewelry making, and is useful for a wide variety of wire-working, -wrapping and -weaving techniques. Soft wire is easy to bend, shape and hammer; it is an ideal starting point for forming, shaping and wire-wrapping. Keep in mind that hardness is changeable (by annealing or heat-hardening) and is relative among metal types (each temper will feel and handle differently from one metal to another). When finishing your pieces, also keep in mind that the harder the metal is, the brighter a finish it will take.

The thickness of the sterling silver overlay on this high-quality sterling silver-filled wire constitutes a full 1/10th of its overall weight (twice the content of 1/20 silver-filled wire of the same gauge). This thicker silver layer lets you form the metal, polish it—even do light engraving—without exposing the brass underneath.
The sterling is bonded to a brass core (CDA #220; 90% copper/10% zinc) over a thin inner liner of nickel (typically 0.1%, by weight) that prevents the silver from diffusing into the brass. Because of the difference in color between the brass substrate and the silver exterior, this material also offers some design possibilities when treated as a bi-metal. By strategically sanding, cutting, polishing and so on, you can create some incredible, unusual effects.
