Made of tough, non-marring linen phenolic (a thermoset resin material), this cone-shaped stabilizer folding mandrel from Jason's Works is used in partnership with coin ring reduction dies to fold and shape a cut coin into a ring. The mandrel is specially designed to use in combination with various die sizes to gradually force the coin downward and outward without marring the design details of the coin, folding the metal from a washer-like configuration outward into a band-style ring configuration.
The size and geometry of this mandrel allows it to be used in place of the graduated set of stabilizing cones. The mandrel tapers from 1-1/4" dia. to 3/8" dia. The tapered shape of the mandrel significantly reduces the incidence of having the coin shift out of alignment as the metal is shaped under pressure; this, in turn, helps ensure smooth, even folding. This mandrel is most effective when used with an arbor press or a hydraulic press.
