This Glardon Vallorbe® Valtitan™ three-square hand file (also called a triangle file) is ideal for filing corners, edges, sharp angles and creases, and is highly recommended for working with platinum and other hard metals; it is also useful for shaping the prongs on marquise- or pear-cut settings. The double-cut file has three flat sides of equal width that taper to a fine point; all three sides have teeth.
Valtitan™ files deliver better performance on hard-to-file surfaces (such as platinum and titanium), have great corrosion resistance and long service life. Valtitan files are specially treated for hardness (65HRC, the hardest steel file available). The teeth on these files resist metal accumulation so that a quick, sharp knock is usually enough to clear them.
This file has a Swiss cut #2; Swiss-cut files are graded by the number of teeth, counting teeth perpendicular to the long axis of the file. In all cut styles, the higher the number, the finer its cut.
A double-cut file features two sets of evenly spaced teeth set in two directions, one at a slightly different angle than the other. Double-cut files are designed to cut more aggressively, maximizing the work of each stroke to remove more metal with fewer strokes. At the end of the stroke, the file should be lifted from the workpiece and repositioned for the next stroke; dragging the file backward against the metal can mar the metal and damage the teeth.
Hand files, also called 'full-size' files, feature a larger cutting surface that is longer and wider than other file types and are ideal for fast, efficient removal of material from the workpiece for initial shaping, for smoothing and, in finer cuts, for finishing. These files have a narrow, tapered tang intended to be secured into a handle (available separately) that provides comfort and control of the file when in use.
The first choice for most jewelers, Glardon Vallorbe® files are manufactured to the highest production standards, made in Switzerland of the finest heat-tempered chrome-alloy steel. The files are precision-ground to cut quickly and accurately and to last longer than just about any other file on the market.
