Designed by wire, bead and metalwork techniques expert and teacher Sandra Lupo and presented by Artistic Wire®, this ingenious tool allows you to quickly and precisely create your own coiled-wire bead cones and bead caps for necklaces, earrings and other designs. The Conetastic™ cone mandrel tool includes three mandrels (11, 8 and 5mm base diameter x 2mm tip diameter) along with an Allen wrench; all pieces fit inside the hollow handle. Simply insert the mandrel of your choice into the opening at the end of the handle, and secure it in place with the Allen wrench.
To create a cone, insert the end of your wire (up to 12 ga. thick) through the hole at the base of the mandrel and bend it downward at 90°. Then, holding the wire in place with your thumb, begin turning the handle, coiling the wire closely around the mandrel until you reach the tip. Clip the wire and trim the excess from the base of the cone; finish or smooth the ends as needed. Mandrels can also be used in a bench vise, if desired, for coiling heavier wire gauges.
