Learn the secret of texturally sculpting metal into any shape or design of high or low relief with the technique of Eastern repoussé and chasing, used by the ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Scythian metalsmiths.
*Prerequisite: This class requires experience with basic metalsmithing and torch-soldering skills.
In this class, you'll make two pieces suitable as pendants as well as one ring while learning to achieve exquisite detail, unsurpassed depth, and multiple levels of relief that are exclusive to this type of repoussé, yet also applicable to any type of design. By working on a jewelry scale, you'll gain a working knowledge of the process that you can use on metalwork of any scale whether wearable, functional, or sculptural.
Through the ring project, you'll also learn Victoria’s method of creating cuff bracelets in a fraction of the time. Discover the possibilities of using this process with alternative materials such as mokume gane and bi-metal. No tool making required!
Victoria and Rio Grande will provide sets of tools for use during the workshop (Swiss machine-replicated from Victoria's own unique tools). An extensive color handout provided during the class offers further information on tool making that you can pursue after the class to serve your particular work.
Through her artwork, publications, workshops, and passion for creating Victoria has generated an international revival of nearly lost, old world metalsmithing techniques. Her award winning artwork has been featured in numerous exhibits and publications, including Metalsmith, Jewelry Artist, Chasing & Repoussé, in books in the Lark 500 series and in her internationally acclaimed video and book series, Metal Techniques of Bronze Age Masters.
Here's what you'll learn in this three-day class! NOTE: We provide all the tools and equipment for use in the class.
• Expert techniques for chasing and repoussé.
• How to raise high-relief designs.
• Practice working with ring and pendant.
• Learn how to use a variety of forming tools and the important safety precautions to follow.
What you'll take home with you:
• The pieces you make in class.
• A wealth of knowledge and the spark to take your jewelry making and soldering in new and exciting directions. After this class, take on more fabrication classes!
