We guarantee everything you buy from Rio Grande to be free from defects in material and/or workmanship. If you're not completely satisfied with any product purchased from us, return it within 30 days and we will exchange it, replace it or refund your money, whichever you prefer. This warranty does not include incidental or consequential expenses. No other warranty is implied.

  1. All backordered items are charged when your backordered items are shipped.
  2. Backordered metal findings and fabrication metals are billed at the market price current on the date the order is filled.
  3. Backorders weighing less than 40 pounds will be shipped free of charge via the most economical shipping option. Backorders weighing 40 pounds or more will be shipped via the most economical option and charged to the method of payment used on the original order.

Make sure to review your order before submitting! Once you place your order, it's immediately sent to our warehouse to get it to you as quickly as possible and within our guaranteed shipping time frames; we are rarely able to edit your order in any way.

5. Payment Methods

1. Rio Grande Open Account
If you are rated 1 or 2 with the Jewelers Board of Trade (JBT) or are rated low-risk with any of our credit reporting agencies, we can open an account for you upon receipt of your signed credit application (this can be faxed). If you are not rated as described above, ask for our Credit Policy Information and Application form. Allow approximately two weeks for processing. Some restrictions may apply. Apply for an open account.

2. Credit Card
We accept MasterCard, VISA, Discover and American Express. Customer/cardholder address and related information are verified with your issuing bank before your order is shipped. Some restrictions may apply.

How do we protect the security of your credit card information?
Rio Grande's systems are protected by a software firewall and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology, which is the e-commerce standard for securing information that travels across the internet. However, our security measures go beyond standard SSL. Your credit card information is never actually stored by Rio Grande; the last four digits of your credit card that you see on our website is actually a "Profile ID" that is part of your user identity with us. Your sensitive information is stored outside of Rio on highly secure remote servers managed by CyberSource, an established financial institution specializing in electronic transactions. Each order you place transmits only your Profile ID across the internet. Fewer transmissions of your actual sensitive data means fewer opportunities for that information to be breached, and it is the highest level of electronic commerce security currently available.

When you order with us by phone, our Customer Service representatives will ask which credit card you would like to pay with by referencing the last four digits of the card. We use the same security provisions with phone orders as with online orders, and at no time is your entire credit card viewable by our Customer Service representatives. They only see the Profile ID provided by the secure, remote servers.

Why is there a $1.00 charge on my credit card and/or bank statement?
As part of our new credit/debit card security process and to maintain our PCI compliance, Rio Grande may verify the credit or debit card number you have used in the past to make sure it is not expired, stolen or otherwise fraudulent. This is done through a one-time pre-authorization of $1.00 to your account that tests its validity. The pre-authorization is normally removed by your bank within two to three business days. It is not a charge, although it may temporarily reduce your available credit by $1.00. If you have any questions or concerns about the validity of a Rio Grande item you see on your account, please call us at 800.545.6566.

3. PayPal
Rio offers PayPal Express Checkout for orders placed online that do not contain backordered items (if your order includes backordered items, the PayPal option is not shown at checkout).

When you select PayPal as your payment method, PayPal will use the funds, if any, available in your balance first, then will automatically draw from the back-up method set up in your PayPal account.

If, due to metal market price fluctuations or shipping recalculation, your order total ends up 15% (or $75) greater than the amount processed by PayPal, a Rio Grande accounting agent will contact you. If you have any issues or concerns with your PayPal account, please contact PayPal customer service.

Please Note: The funds for any returns on merchandise purchased using PayPal will be credited to your Rio Grande account.*

*While we are working to make it possible for us to credit these returns directly back to PayPal accounts, we cannot currently do so.

4. Prepaid Orders
Certified funds such as money orders or cashier's checks are recommended. To expedite service, use a bank wire transfer. Please allow for price fluctuations and include shipping costs. If the quoted shipping cost is more than the actual cost, we will credit your account or issue a refund, whichever you request. If you send a check with your order, the check must include your name, address and daytime phone number. This information will be verified with your bank. Export funds are accepted in U.S. dollars only. Some restrictions may apply.

5. Short-Term Installment Plan (STIP)

6. Leasing Options

To lease merchandise, you may either contact a leasing company of your choice or call your Rio Grande sales representative at 505.839.3060 for a referral.

  1. Most companies require order numbers and dollar amounts for merchandise. Your sales representative can provide this information on a quote invoice.
  2. If you choose your own leasing company, our Accounts Receivable office will need the name, address and contact person of the leasing company. Please call 505.839.3060 to relay this information.

Whenever a U.S. federal holiday falls on a regular business day, packages shipping via USPS are not picked up or delivered on that day. These orders go out the following business day. Orders shipping via other carriers, including UPS, FedEx, and trucking and freight carriers, are picked up or delivered as usual.

All Other Shipments
Truck freight, air freight, international air and ocean freight fees are based on weight and are billed at exact shipping cost. Orders requiring truck freight will be placed on hold until a Rio Grande customer service representative can contact you to complete your order. Carriers charge an additional fee for handling hazardous items; inquire when ordering.

Hazardous Materials Shipping Charges

We ship all hazardous items through United Parcel Service (UPS). UPS may charge up to an additional $28.50 to handle hazardous chemicals by ground and $40.00 or more by air. The rates and procedures of other shippers vary.

These charges apply to each separate package or chemical a carrier handles, unless you purchase multiples of the same product that can be shipped together. However, some chemicals have very strict regulations on the quantities that can be shipped, so we may not be permitted to ship multiple containers together.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) Emergency Response Communication Standard controls the shipping of chemicals deemed hazardous by the DOT, and governs the labeling and handling of a variety of materials.

Over the past few years, this standard has resulted in increased costs from most of our shippers for handling these materials. Some of our packaging amounts have been changed to reflect the quantity limitations that the DOT has placed on shipping certain chemicals. We will continue to revise our shipping policies to comply with changing regulations.

We recommend that you obtain a copy of a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each product you use, and keep it in your files. MSDSs are provided free of charge and are also available on our website (just search for the item and click the "More Info" tab).

8. Returns & Corrections

Returns Online

All returns (or repairs) must be accompanied by the item(s) invoice number or date of purchase and your customer number. If you use our easy Free Online Returns process, this information will be included automatically with your return label.

Returns will be credited or refunded by the same method of payment used for the purchase (except where noted below*).

To return an item using our Free Online Returns:

  1. Log into your account and find the invoice that includes the item to be returned.
  2. Select the item for return.
  3. Follow the easy step-by-step process to generate your addressed, prepaid, insured return label.

To return an item without our Free Online Returns:

  1. Call customer service for a prepaid authorized return service (ARS) label (U.S. customers only).
  2. For your protection, ship all returns prepaid and insured.
  3. Address to:

Package your return properly:

  1. Pack the item in a sturdy carton (the original, if possible, unless the box has been labeled for Hazardous shipment — do not re-use boxes labeled Hazardous) along with one copy of your online label (or the top portion of your invoice)
  2. Seal with strong tape.
  3. Attach the return label you printed (or received from Rio Grande).
  4. Drop off your package with your carrier.

Please Note: Hazardous items, special-order items, custom-made or cut-to-order items, physically altered items, and partially used packages are not returnable.
Additionally, do not re-use any box that has been labeled for Hazardous shipment.

Please Note: We reserve the right to refuse any merchandise returned after the 30-day warranty period or to charge additional restocking fees on such merchandise (U.S. customers).

*Payments Tendered by PayPal
Until we are able to credit these returns directly back to PayPal accounts, funds for any returns on merchandise purchased using PayPal will be credited to your Rio Grande account.

*Precious Milled Material, Casting Grain and Precious Metal Clay
For returns postmarked within 10 days of the invoice date, we will refund or issue a Rio Grande credit based on the invoice price. For returns postmarked more than 10 days after the invoice date, we will charge a 15% restocking fee and issue a Rio Grande credit only.

*Findings, Tools, Equipment and Display Items
For returns postmarked within 30 days of the invoice date, we will issue a full refund or Rio Grande credit based on the invoice price. For returns postmarked more than 30 days after the invoice date, we will charge a 10% restocking fee and issue a Rio Grande credit only.

*International customers: Free Online Returns service is not available for countries outside the U.S. We cannot refund international shipping charges, duties or taxes. 9. Repairs

Most of our tools and equipment come with a one-year warranty. To return an item for evaluation or repair, package it as you would a return (see Returns & Corrections), address to "Attention: Repair Department" and send it prepaid and insured. Your invoice number is vital; it serves as your warranty. Allow 3–6 weeks after we have received the item for repair.

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is available free for all of our products that carry one. Click here for all MSDSs. The MSDS for a particular product can also be found on the product detail page under the "More Info" tab.

11. Pricing

We do our very best to offer you the most competitive prices and best selection on all our products. We do our very best to hold prices, but prices may vary due to charges that are out of our control, including currency exchange rates, fluctuations in freight costs, raw materials market, labor costs and customs duties. Expect some pricing variation depending on conditions at the time you order.

Regular orders are billed at the item prices current on the day orders are received. Special orders and backorders are billed at the price current on the day the items are shipped.

13. Metals & Milled Precious Metal Items


  1. Pricing for all precious metal milled materials is calculated using the total weight per metal type (gold, sterling, etc.) in your order and the current market price for that metal plus a fabrication charge. Items of the same metal are combinable to provide you the best price break; any exceptions will be noted on your invoice for you to see.
  2. We guarantee that your price will be based on the market price current at the time we receive your order and provide you with an order confirmation number.
    PLEASE NOTE: This guarantee does not apply to milled materials placed on backorder; these will be billed at market price current on the date the order is filled.
  3. The current daily metal market price is displayed on our home page and on the item detail screen.
  4. We strive to measure quantities ordered as closely as possible; however, due to manufacturing tolerances at the mill, please allow for a +/- 10% variance when ordering.

PLEASE NOTE: When purchasing cut-to-order metals using a Rio credit/Rio gift certificate along with a credit card, the full amount of your credit/gift certificate will be applied first, and the remaining balance will be applied to your credit card. If your final charge is slightly higher than when you placed your order (due to the possible 10% tolerance described above), this small balance will appear on your credit card statement as a second charge.


  1. All backordered items are charged when the order is shipped and are billed at the market price current on the date the order is filled.

Cutting Charges

  1. The first two pieces for each cut-to-order item are cut free of charge; for quantities above two, a cutting fee of $0.33 will be charged for each additional piece. Cutting charges for backordered items are charged upfront with the original order.

Minimum Weight of Piece Size

  1. For most silver and gold-filled milled materials items, the minimum order is 0.01 ozt. per item.
  2. For most gold and platinum milled materials items, the minimum order is 0.01 pennyweight (dwt) per item.
  3. Sheet has individual minimum and maximum dimension requirements. If the dimensions you enter for any item in your order do not meet requirements, you will be prompted to enter minimum required dimensions.
  4. When you ask for specific dimensions and individual availability is limited, we will offer you the option to accept a combination of pieces amounting to the total weight of your order.

To protect your cut-to-order precious metal items during shipping:

  1. All sheets are packed between two pieces of cardboard taped together to secure the sheets inside.
  2. All gold items (sheet, wire, tubing) are packed in heat-sealed plastic bags.
  3. Coiled wire and by-the-foot chain is secured with twist ties, not tape.
  4. Chain lengths of more than 15 feet are wound onto cardboard squares or plastic spools.
  5. Each item is labeled with its item number and quantity.
  6. Alloys are packed in individual plastic containers.
  7. Casting grain quantities of more than 5 ounces are double-bagged.
  8. Tubing is packed in individual bags that are reinforced with tape to prevent tearing.
  9. Items ordered in their full-size dimensions will be shipped at full size; we do not cut down for ease of shipping.

Milled Materials & Casting Grain Returns
Returns postmarked within 10 days of the invoice date are accepted for full refund or Rio Grande credit based on the invoice price. Returns postmarked more than 10 days after the invoice date will be subject to a 15% restocking fee and are accepted for Rio Grande credit only.

15. What Does Sustainable Mean to Rio Grande?

What does Sustainable mean to Rio Grande? It is a social pact with future generations. Sustainable means meeting our present needs without compromising the needs of our children.

How is Rio Grande going about accomplishing that? In part by offering products to you that are made from materials that are recycled/recovered or made from renewable materials. Another is to encourage manufacturing processes that minimize environmental impacts. More than 85% of our gold is recycled and the majority of the balance comes from American gold mines.

When I see the "Sustainable" label in the Rio Grande catalog, what does that mean? In the Findings and Metals sections, it means the stock numbers in green are products made with reclaimed/recycled metal or from third party certified, ethically mined metal. Many of the other products in the catalog are also likely made primarily or exclusively with recycled metal, we just haven't yet established this with certainty.

In the Display and Packaging section, sustainable means the products with green stock numbers are either made from recycled materials, renewable materials and/or are produced by manufacturing processes that employ ecologically sound methods.

This is the first time I've seen the "Sustainable" label in the Rio Grande Catalog. Is this a new initiative? Actually, we've been at it for a long time. Our refinery, which recycles silver and gold from a variety of sources, is 30 years old and has won numerous environmental awards over the years.

In 1968, Rio Grande eliminated harmful cadmium from the solders we sell, twenty years before this became common practice.

We've devised a way to reduce the investment material consumed in our casting operation by 20%.

We have done energy consumption audits of our buildings for many years and currently use a third less energy to run our facilities than we did ten years ago.

We have eliminated toxic solvents from our cleaning processes and now use soap and water to clean our products.

This is just a partial list. We see sustainability as a never-ending process. One filled with opportunities to make our future better than the past. One we can all participate in and benefit from together. Our commitment to you and, more importantly, to our children is to never let up, and encourage others to do the same.

16. Lead Content In Our Products

If you intend to incorporate any base metal components purchased from Rio Grande into jewelry for children age 12 and younger, please be aware that you are responsible for testing those products to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws including, but not limited to, the lead content requirements in CPSIA. PLEASE NOTE: All base metal items in this catalog that contain even trace amounts of lead are marked with a "Pb" symbol and are not suitable for children's jewelry.

17. The AGTA Guide to Gemstone Treatments

ASBL: Assembled from multiple layers or combinations of manufactured and/or natural material fused, bonded or otherwise joined together to increase stability and/or imitate the appearance of a natural gemstone, create a unique design or generate unusual color combinations. Example: Opal triplets

L: A laser and chemicals used to reach and alter inclusions in gemstones, usually diamonds.

B: Bleached using heat, light and/or other agents to lighten or remove color.

O: Oiling/resin infusion; the filling of surface breaking fissures with colorless oil, wax, resin or other colorless substances, except glass or plastic, to improve the gemstone's appearance.

C: Coating on the surface with such enhancements as lacquering, enameling, inking, foiling or sputtering of films to improve appearance, provide color or add other special effects.

R: Irradiation using neutrons, gamma rays, beta particles or high energy electrons to alter color. May be followed by a heating process.

D: Dyed by the introduction of coloring matter to give a new color, intensify present color or improve color uniformity.

S: Stabilized using a colorless bonding agent (such as plastic); used on porous gemstones to add durability and improve appearance
(sometimes referred to as "I" impregnated).

F: Filling of surface-breaking cavities or fissures with colorless glass, plastic, solidified borax or similar substances (visible under 10X magnification); improves durability, appearance and/or adds weight.

SYN: Synthetic materials with essentially the same optical, physical and chemical properties as a naturally occurring gemstone.

H: Heated to effect desired alterations of color, clarity and/or phenomena. If residue of foreign substances in open fissures is visible under properly illuminated 10X magnification, "HF" should be used.

U: Diffusion; chemicals used in conjunction with high temperatures to produce color and/or asterism-producing inclusions.

HP: Heating and pressure combined to effect desired alterations of color, clarity and/or phenomena.
