What kind of scrap can I return?

We accept silver, gold, gold-filled, palladium, fired PMC® and platinum items. We cannot accept base metal, electroplating solutions, photographic processing materials or sweeps (if you have sweep metal you wish to donate to a good cause, please visit riogrande.com/sweepsforcerf for information about donating your sweeps). Please do not send plated non-precious metal jewelry;
we cannot recover the precious metal from this type of jewelry.

What is my scrap worth?

Payment amounts are based on market value current on the day we settle your scrap return, regardless of when it was shipped or received.

Note: Cleaning scrap, separating metals, melting small pieces and clearly labeling scrap before shipping will significantly speed this process.

Important: Rio Grande reserves the right to physically alter the metal scrap in order to determine its purity. Please note your piece might be damaged or malformed during testing. Therefore, if you request the piece be returned to you, it may not arrive in the same condition you sent it in.

The table below shows the percentage of the daily spot market that Rio pays for your precious metal scrap.

  Rio Credit Refund Check
Fine silver and cadmium-free sterling silver* 75% 65%
Cadmium-bearing sterling silver (requires special refining) 65% 65%
Silver dust 40% 40%
Minted fine silver coins and bars from Rio Grande 98% 98%
Minted fine silver coins and bars not sold by Rio Grande 92% 92%
Gold-filled ( at least 12/20 ) 1.89% total weight 1.89% total weight
24K gold ( Jeweler’s karat gold scrap )** 75% 65%
Minted 24KY gold coins from Rio Grande 98% 98%
Minted 24KY gold coins not sold by Rio Grande 92% 92%
Platinum*** 60% 60%
Palladium**** 60% 60%

* Rio Grande pays the same rate by total weight for jeweler’s silver scrap whether it is fine silver or sterling. (Note: Because sterling silver contains less pure silver by weight, and because we pay both sterling and fine silver at this percentage, you will actually receive payment in the equivalent of 81% for sterling silver)

** Rio Grande buys 10K, 14K and other forms of karat gold. We pay for the pure gold content within. Please refer to the purity table below.

*** Most jewery-grade platinum is either 90% or 95% pure platinum. Rio Grande pays for the amount of pure platinum present in your scrap.

**** Rio Grande buys alloyed palladium jewelry metal. Rio pays for the amount of pure palladium present.

Purity Table
10K gold 0.4167 purity (vintage 10K is often only 9.5K or 0.3958 purity)
14K gold 0.5833 purity (vintage 14K is often only 13.5K or 0.5625 purity)
18K gold 0.7500 purity
22K gold 0.9166 purity

Gold Example:
( Rio buys gold by the pennyweight (dwt). 20 dwt equals 1 troy ounce. )
You return 10 dwts of 10K gold scrap.
10 dwts (gross weight) x 0.4167 = 4.17 dwts 24K gold
Daily Spot Market of $1200 per troy ounce = $60 per dwt
Rio pays 75% of $60 = $45 per dwt
Your store credit equals 4.17 x 45.00 = $187.65

Gold-Filled Example:
You turn in 10 ounces of mixed gold-filled scrap. Some of it is 12kt 1/20th, and some of it is 14kt 1/20th gold-filled wire and sheet scraps. At $1200 gold market, Rio Grande pays 1.89% of the market, or $22.68 per troy ounce.
Your scrap credit/payment is therefore $226.80
